Real Christianity

I love flowers--all flowers--but these are petunias in particular.  I'm showing a photo of not only a seedling that has germinated and grown, but also the full-grown beautiful flowers.  They're planted that they might bloom, bringing forth its full fruit of a flower.  That is what we are meant to do as Christians!  We are saved that we might grow and bring forth fruit.  Jesus said in my first Bible reference, "Ye shall know them by their fruits."  Do people see Jesus Christ in you?  Do people see a difference in you?  Are you producing fruit for His kingdom?  Please read further!  Please be certain that you are Christ's and have a home in Heaven--not just following a crowd.  May Christianity be real in you!

Matthew 7:16-27  Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?  Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.  Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Evidence of Life--or Being Alive:
     1.  It has a capacity for growth
     2.  It shows evidence of activity
     3.  It has capacity to reproduce

  • Do you show evidence of salvation?
  • Are there signs of life?
  • What are you trusting in?
  • There is only one way to Heaven.  (John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but my Me."

Back in Christ's day, the word "Christian" was coined to mean "little followers or imitators" of Jesus Christ.  It was a derogatory term meant as an insult.  It was meant for the disciples of Jesus Christ.  But there are so many people today who call themselves "Christians," and yet really have no desire to follow the Savior.  There's the question for you!  Are you following Jesus Christ?  Are you following and imitating Jesus Christ because that is just exactly what Christ calls us to do!  We are to be a "rubber stamp," a copy of the One we are following; we are to be taking on His image--not like the world who is just doing their own thing!  There's the second question: who is it you look like--Jesus Christ or just SELF??  If you're truly His, His Word will make a change--from the inside out, and an inner beauty (of Christ) will shine forth.  As I have said before, He is the reason for it all; it's not about you any longer!  He is to be glorified in our lives!

1 John 2:3 says, "And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments."  Question is, do you have a desire to follow Him and obey His Word--because if you don't, you had better check why!  Is there real evidence of salvation, or are you just a pretender, someone that's just following the crowd?  Back to one of my original points, if you are truly saved, there should be evidence--evidence of salvation, evidence of growth, evidence of activity, evidence of trying to reproduce.  That's a long list, isn't it?  But that's just exactly what God has called us to.  If we are truly saved, then there should be evidence of life--growing and reproducing!

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."  If you're truly a "Christian," God should be at work in you, making you a new creature.  He desires to change you--not that He can hold His big hammer over your head, no!--but that God can be glorified in our lives, bringing others to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ!

Matthew 13:3-9 says, "And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.  And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.  Who hath ears to hear, let him hear."

Jesus Christ used a lot of parables in his day to teach from a prospective people would understand.  The point Christ was trying to make here was that when the Word of God goes forth, some will receive it; but many others will not.  And others yet, the Word will be sown in their hearts, but because of the things of this world, or even the devil himself, the Word will go unheeded.  The question is--and the bottom line is this--which one are you?  Are you 100% positive you're on your way to Heaven??--or is there some doubt in your heart and mind?  Dear friend, if there's even a half of a percent of doubt in your heart and mind, please make sure today!!  What or Whom are you trusting in today?  If your answer is anything but Jesus Christ, then you are not trusting in the right thing--and Heaven is not your home.  Please make sure today!  You can go back to any of my old postings on salvation, and read the salvation message, or you can post a comment or question.  I'd be happy to help you any way I can.

    May you truly know
    Christ today!

Soldiers of Christ, Arise!

Let me turn your attention to our military for a moment.  (It doesn't have to be American, although I am especially partial!)…any military will do for my illustration.  What are some characteristics you can think of?  Feel free to leave your comments!  Here are some I thought of:
  1. looks sharp
  2. disciplined
  3. works hard
  4. defends a cause
  5. not focused on selfish desires

Now, there's no doubt a number of other characteristics that could be added to this; but this gives us a good start.  This is an excellent comparison for us, Christian!  There are so many countless people today who call themselves "Christians," and yet really have no desire to follow the Savior.  (perhaps I'll save that for another post!)  At any rate, God calls us to have all of those characteristics, and yet too many Christians today would rather just do their own thing.  What a shame!  I think our military today would call that going "AWOL," (meaning Absent Without Official Leave: A term used in the United States Military to describe a soldier or other military member who has left his or her post without permission--usually in disagreement with a particular order)...and somehow I think that's a pretty good definition of so many Christians today.

Now let's turn to a couple verses in Scripture, 2 Timothy 2:3-4: "Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.  No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier."In this book of the Bible, Paul is writing to Timothy, a young pastor, trying to encourage him and instruct him.  Paul instructs Timothy to "endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ."  He is encouraging him to be strong in the Lord, to "endure hardness," and to be careful not to be "entangled" with the "affairs of this life."  Some points we need to be careful to heed. Now lets turn to another well-known passage, Ephesians 6:10-18, speaking about the Christian warfare and in particular his armor: "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:  Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;"

Now, in closing, think for a moment of the many songs in our hymnals about being a soldier of Christ:
Soldiers of Christ, Arise!
Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus
Sound the Battle Cry
The Banner of the Cross
Am I a Soldier of the Cross

And I'm sure there are many, many others you could list.  When you have a spare moment, take a few minutes and just look through the words of those precious songs.  What wonderful and convicting words they have!  Are we a soldier of the cross, a follower of the Lamb?--or do we blush to speak His name??  Are we careful to put our armor on, stand strong in His strength alone?  Do we lift high the banner of the cross?  Do we rest our cause upon His Holy Word?       God has called us for a purpose--and that is to be a witness in this dark and sinful world.  We should no longer be attached to this world--nor our selfish desires.  We are not our own, Christian (1 Cor. 6:19-20)…we have been bought with a price: "therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."

2011--May we go forward for God!

I love trees--particularly oak trees!  They're so strong looking.  Do you know that God likens us to trees, in at least two places in scripture.  I believe I mentioned this before when I discussed fruit.  Let me reiterate!  Because this is a new year upon us, we should be thinking how we can make this year different--how we can improve upon the things of the past.  I thank God, our God is a God of new beginnings!  He is most gracious and merciful…how awesome a God we serve!  But He's a God of new beginnings because He desires for us to go forward, to reach higher heights for Him.

Let's discuss that topic again: producing fruit.  What is fruit?  I believe fruit is everything in our lives--as born-again Christians--that points others to Christ.  That can mean everything from the fruit of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace...), to our witness and testimony for Christ, to even the character (or God-like qualities) that God and His Holy Spirit is producing in us.

Fruit refers to evidence of what is within
We will see a harvest of fruit as we yield to God and allow His Spirit to work in and through us
The fruit of the Spirit should be evident--ever growing
Psalm 1:3  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Jeremiah 17:7-8  Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.  For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
  1. vibrant
  2. productive
  3. fruitful
  1. strong
  2. stable
  3. dependent
  4. sturdy
  5. confident
  6. abiding
  7. rooted in Him
  8. focused
  9. persevering
  10. ever-growing
  11. reaching forward

  1. "rivers" is referring to the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit is often likened to water
  2. It is the Holy Spirit that keeps us alive, vital, vibrant--growing and productive
  3. rivers don't stand still--they're always moving--so we should always be growing, going forward for God
  1. the tree is a picture of strength because it is the Word of God and the Holy Spirit that make us strong--sturdy and stable
  2. just as a tree's roots dig down deep into the soil, so we should dig deep into God's Word to keep us strong and sturdy
  3. make sure you're feeding the right kind of root system
  4. something to note:  a tree does not produce fruit without roots

In the year 2011, may we go forward for God, producing fruit for His kingdom!

         That we might produce
          fruit for His kingdom!
